Design as a compass: interfaces and installations for TERRÆ AQUÆ at the Biennale di Venezia 2025.

Problem

A vast archive of multimedia content, architectural projects, video narratives, geographic data, needed to come alive inside one of the world's most significant cultural venues. The challenge was to translate complexity into clarity, without losing the poetic dimension of the exhibition's theme.

Solution

Two parallel design interventions: interactive touch interfaces inside the Arsenale, guiding visitors through six thematic categories of content, and a graphic symbology system for the outdoor garden installation Il Viaggio di Ulisse, eight stages of memory, transformation, and discovery, scattered across the landscape.

For the exhibition TERRÆ AQUÆ – L'Italia e l'intelligenza del mare, presented at the 19th Venice Architecture Biennale, we designed the interfaces for the pavilion's interactive touch monitors and created the graphic symbology for the outdoor garden installations — translating a vast amount of multimedia content into a clear, immersive experience capable of dialoguing with the physical space of the Arsenale.

The project was born from the need to mediate between two very different spatial registers: the dark, ancient interior of the Arsenale, where the touch monitors invited visitors to navigate content across six categories (Archeologie, Ecologie, Geografie, Intersezioni, Narrazioni, Scenari), and the open garden outside, where wooden crates marked with names and symbols became the physical nodes of a symbolic journey.

Each interface screen was designed as a landscape in itself: colour-coded by category, with fluid organic forms evoking coastlines and sea charts. The visual language had to feel both institutional and immersive, grounded in the pavilion's identity curated by Guendalina Salimei (T-Studio), while remaining intuitive for visitors encountering it without prior context.

Il Viaggio di Ulisse extended the experience outdoors, transforming the garden into a navigable myth. The graphic symbology applied to the installation elements gave each of the eight stages a distinct identity, inviting visitors to move, read, and interpret the space as both landscape and story.
