Matèria

Questa è Matèria is an editorial project conceived to chronicle ten years of activity at the Matèria contemporary art gallery in Rome's San Lorenzo district. More than a catalog, it is an object to navigate: a collection of loose sheets housed in a box, inviting readers to shuffle, combine, and reorder them without a fixed path, reflecting the gallery's independent, open spirit.

The format was the concept from the start. A bound book would have imposed hierarchy where none was intended, so the project abandoned the spine entirely. Each sheet lives on its own terms: a voice, a fragment, a distinct perspective on time, space, and artwork. Together they form a whole; separately, they each hold their own.

The visual language was built on restraint. Monospaced typography, essential composition, and a strict black-and-white palette give the system a raw, archival quality, closer to a typewritten document than a designed object. The tactility of the materials carries equal weight to the content printed on them.

Photographed outdoors against stone and concrete, the final documentation extends the project's language into the physical world, grounding an editorial object in the same textures and surfaces that define San Lorenzo itself.
