BINO
Unlock hidden stories, step by step.

Problem
Tourism pushes people toward the same landmarks, the same routes, the same experiences. Meanwhile, the real texture of a city, its neighborhoods, its hidden histories, its everyday details, goes unnoticed. Existing audio guides are linear, top-down, and disconnected from the physical act of walking.
Solution
is a location-based audio guide that transforms manhole covers, one of the most overlooked elements of urban infrastructure, into narrative gateways. By approaching a specific spot, users unlock short, site-specific audio stories tied to the exact place they are standing. The city becomes a map to read with your feet.
BINO is a location-based audio guide designed to help people experience the city beyond its most famous landmarks. Built on the idea that the most meaningful stories are often hidden in everyday details, BINO uses proximity-based technology and a minimal interface to guide users at a human pace, encouraging discovery without disrupting the flow of the walk. Rather than helping users see more, it invites them to see differently.
The project began with a provocation: what if the most interesting access point to a city's history was something everyone walks over without ever noticing? Manhole covers were chosen not just as a design concept, but as a genuine UX trigger, each one physically marking a spot, each one carrying a distinct pattern that became part of the app's visual identity. The real covers were photographed across Rome, then redrawn as graphic icons used throughout the interface.
The user flow was designed around minimal friction. A proximity-based map shows nearby unlockable stories as softly pulsing nodes; approaching one reveals a short audio story, brief, contextual, impossible to get wrong. The experience doesn't demand attention, it rewards it. Soft engagement mechanics like Bino Points, neighborhood quizzes, and connections with local businesses deepen the relationship between user and place over time without ever feeling forced.
The interface system, dark background, teal accents, clean typography, was built to feel at home in the street: readable in sunlight, unobtrusive while walking, calm enough to let the audio take centre stage. BINO proposes a slower, more conscious way of exploring the city, one that values context, local identity, and the quiet richness of everyday urban life.
